Center for Carmelite Studies

Ecumenical Lecture: November 18

A few weeks ago, the Center welcomed Karin Johannesson, the Lutheran Bishop of Uppsala, Sweden, for a guest lecture at CUA on the topic of “Thérèse of Lisieux and the Grace of Ecumenism.” Bishop Johannesson has a deep interest in Carmelite spirituality. At this lecture she spoke on St. Thérèse as a touchpoint for dialogue between Lutheran and Catholic theology on the doctrine of grace. Her book Thérèse and Martin: Carmel and the Reformation in a New Light was published in 2023. One of her recently published articles also explored connections between Carmelite and Lutheran theology:Graceful Ascesis, Christ and the Cross. Carmelite Teachers and Lutheran Doctrine in Today’s Western World,” One in Christ, vol. 56 (2024).
